Woman goes viral for asking how she should inform her cat about a breakup

A woman has gone viral on Twitter after asking users how she should inform her cat about her break up with her boyfriend, and other animal owners could relate to the dilemma.

Abby Govindan, 22, from Houston, Texas, is a comedian and writer who took to Twitter on January 11 about her biggest problem regarding her break up from her boyfriend.

‘How do I explain to my cat, who loved my boyfriend more than anything in the world, that he is never coming over again ever,’ she asked.

This tweet clearly resonated with the online community, because it was liked more than 250,000 thousand times, while hundreds of people penned replies, with some offering advice, with others sharing words of sympathy.

When speaking to BBC, Govindan explained how that question was one of her first thoughts following her break up, so she decided to share it.

‘I got broken up with and so a few minutes later I tweeted the first thoughts in my head,’ she told the publication, expressing her shock over the viral attention. ‘People were really nice but I just didn’t expect the response.’

Govindan confessed she was more of a dog person to the BBC, but she decided to get her cat, Anjali, one year ago.

‘She was a rescue and provides me with emotional support,’ she said.

It was actually Govindan’s ex-partner, whom she dated for seven months, that bonded more with the cat and seemed to have his own language with her.

‘They understood each other on an intimate level and she adored him,’ Govindan added.

‘I just wish I could explain to her what’s going on. I think she knows something is different as when I came home after the break up she was far more affectionate with me than she usually is.’

Other pet owners understood what Govindan was going through, and even commented on her tweet about their own experience handing break ups with animals.

‘I age my ex my cat of 8 years because I couldn’t bare to be the one who separated that dynamic duo lol,’ one cat owner confessed. ‘She liked him so much better than me anyway but I miss her everyday.’

Multiple owners also shared pictures of their cats sitting in roommates’ old rooms after they left.

‘This was our cat when our roommate moved out,’ one Twitter user wrote while sharing a picture of her distressed cat. ‘She would constantly go to her old room and just meow. She was so attached to her it was heartbreaking.’

Some people thought Govindan’s tweet was just a joke, but the animal community were quick to point out it can be hard on pets when someone leaves.

”To ppl implying like “its just a dumb cat” way to be incredibly unhelpful lol,’ one person wrote. ‘Cats are strange creatures but they’re very capable of emotion & attachment. Don’t trivialize the experiences of other animals.’
